Atlantic salmon populations in the Neiden River have declined in recent years. To safeguard this iconic species, Finland and Norway are working to renew their bilateral fishing agreement and strengthen conservation measures. A key part of this cooperation is providing up-to-date data on Neiden River salmon stocks, which is used to support the annual scientific status assessment carried out by the newly appointed Finnish-Norwegian monitoring and research group.

One of the results of the Interreg Aurora funded project Our Precious Transboundary Waters is the public Neiden Salmon Database, which compiles research data from both sides of the border into an interactive, map-based platform. The database is available at: https://luonnonvaratieto.luke.fi/kartat?panel=vaelluskalat&lang=fi

This initiative builds on the earlier Interreg Nord project, Tana River which created a similar salmon database for the Tana River.

The Neiden database provides updated information on:

  • Adult salmon distribution
  • Salmon spawning targets
  • Monitoring surveys done
  • Permanent electrofishing sites
  • Juvenile salmon densities

What is spawning target?
Spawning target is the number of eggs that are needed (eggs/m2) for the river to produce its maximum number of smolts. For management purposes spawning target can also be expressed as biomass of female salmon needed to reach maximum production.
