Arctic Melt Solutions – Sustainable Snowmelt Water Management

Partner search: Kajaani University of Applied Sciences is developing solutions for an environmental challenge in Arctic and Sub-Arctic cities: urban snow deposits and untreated snowmelt runoff. When snow melts in spring, it often carries pollutants, litter, and road salt into soils and water bodies. Climate change is making winters more variable, increasing snow volumes and related risks.

Project idea
We aim to pilot nature-based and digital approaches for treating snowmelt runoff. One pilot is already ongoing in the Horizon Europe project URBREATH, and we plan to expand this with site-specific pilots across the Aurora region. Based on these pilots, we will co-create practical guidelines with municipalities and contractors to ensure solutions are feasible in real urban environments.

Expected results

  • Reduced pollutant load from urban snow deposits
  • Improved water quality and soil health
  • Practices that can be applied in Arctic and Sub-Arctic cities

Partners sought
Municipalities and research organizations, especially in Sweden, interested in piloting and sharing results with local stakeholders. Partners from Norway and Finland are also welcome.

Funding and timeline
We aim to apply for funding in the Interreg Aurora call in March 2026, or later.

Kajaani University of Applied Sciences has experience in international projects addressing environmental challenges and is prepared to act as lead partner.
