New Master’s Programme in Arctic Indigenous Cinema to Launch in 2025

The project partners in the Interreg Aurora funded project Indigenous Digital Storytelling with New Media are proud to announce the upcoming launch of the Arctic Indigenous Cinema Master’s Programme at the University of Lapland. The Cinema Master’s Programme is opening for applications in September 2025. This initiative has been developed in collaboration with researchers, artists, and Indigenous storytellers connected to the project research group.

The programme builds on the project’s commitment to advancing Indigenous voices in the digital era and fostering new forms of creative expression rooted in Arctic cultures. It offers a unique two-year study track combining creative practice and academic research, leading to a Master of Arts (Art and Design) degree.

Students will develop skills in:

  • Film dramaturgy, narrative structures, and media art;
  • Screenwriting for both traditional film and interactive media;
  • Directing and production practices across fiction, documentary, and media art formats;
  • Artistic filmmaking techniques and audiovisual media;
  • Academic research on Indigenous storytelling traditions, with a focus on contemporary issues and Arctic contexts.

Teaching is delivered through a blended model: distance learning modules supported by intensive, in-person sessions in Rovaniemi, Finland. This format allows students from diverse international backgrounds to engage with the programme while accommodating different geographical and professional situations.

Key dates:

  • Application period: 1–11 September 2025 (by 15:00 Finnish time)
  • Admission results: 20 October 2025
  • Studies begin: January 2026

The programme is open to applicants holding a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in fields such as media, visual arts, drama, theatre, or journalism. Applicants from other relevant disciplines are also encouraged to apply. A good command of English is required for academic purposes.
