Partner search: Kajaani University of Applied Sciences (KAMK UAS) is developing solutions to strengthen biodiversity in Arctic and Sub-Arctic cities. Urban biodiversity is essential for climate resilience, health and well-being, and sustainable urban development. The upcoming EU Biodiversity Strategy will require cities with over 20,000 inhabitants to develop an Urban Nature Plan, making this initiative highly relevant.
Project Idea
We aim to enhance biodiversity in urban areas by piloting nature-based solutions and engaging residents. The project builds on insights from the Horizon Europe project Urbreath and adapts them to Arctic and Sub-Arctic conditions. Planned activities include:
- Pilot activities in cities aiming for increased biodiversity (for example, green roofs, pollinator corridors, and biodiversity-friendly parks)
- Citizen engagement programs: workshops and guidance
- Guidance and capacity building for municipalities on Urban Nature Plan development
- Knowledge sharing through cross-border cooperation
Expected Results
- Increased biodiversity in urban areas
- Stronger community involvement in nature protection
- Scalable models for Arctic and Sub-Arctic cities
- Contribution to EU biodiversity and climate goals
Partners Sought
Municipalities and research organizations, especially in Sweden, interested in piloting and co-creating solutions. Partners from Finland and Norway are also welcome.
