Nykarleby hosted a well-attended water information evening on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, bringing together local stakeholders, experts, and residents to discuss ongoing water management and restoration efforts in the region.
Throughout the evening, participants were presented with updates on projects led by ÖVM, including results from recent studies in the area. One of the key topics was the joint monitoring of the Lapua River, offering insights into the current state of local waterways.
Representatives from the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment introduced restoration methods developed and tested by the cross-border project SeaMoreEco. They also outlined the scope of the newly launched Interreg Aurora-funded project HIDDEN, highlighting its research methods, study areas, and objectives for the coming years.
Local organizations played a central role in the discussions. The Nykarleby fishing association and Socklot Joint Property Association shared perspectives on their respective water areas, detailing past and ongoing conservation measures. They also emphasized priority areas where further restoration efforts would be most beneficial.
The evening concluded with a presentation of the Omakala app (https://omakala.fi/), a digital tool aimed at supporting sustainable fishing and water management. An engaging discussion and Q&A session rounded off the event, reflecting strong community interest in the future of local water environments.
The event was organized as part of the Waterinfo project in collaboration with the Coastal Ostrobothnia Water Restoration Network.
