In August, Minister of Science and Culture Mari-Leena Talvitie, Member of Parliament Heikki Autto, and Hannu Vainonen from the Ministry of Education and Culture visited Tornio. During the visit, they learned about cross-border cooperation and the Torne Valley Dipnet Culture project, as well as about dipnet fishing and its journey toward inclusion on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
At Kukkola Rapids, the guests experienced the dipnetting tradition with all their senses: dipnetting for whitefish, skewering them, and frying them in a traditional hut. The visit concluded with a delicious meal of freshly grilled whitefish. Finally, the guests explored the From Torne River to Paris exhibition at the Museum of Torne Valley. Many thanks to our visitors for an inspiring and memorable day!
