Project Spotlight: Indigenous Digital Storytelling with New Media presented for Interreg Aurora Steering Committees

The Interreg Aurora Steering Committees meeting held in Umeå in June 2025, highlighted progress on funded projects, including a presentation from Indigenous Digital Storytelling with New Media to share its journey and achievements.

Held at the renowned Norrlandsoperan, the event offered a platform to showcase the creative and collaborative efforts shaping Indigenous storytelling across borders. Dr. Amna Qureshi, project manager, delivered an engaging presentation outlining key milestones from the first 10 months of the three-year initiative. Her presentation highlighted the project’s innovative approach to using new media for Indigenous narratives, fostering cultural sustainability and cross-regional cooperation.

The project, a collaboration between Lapin Yliopisto (Lead Partner EU), Sámi Allaskuvla (Lead Partner Norway), and Umeå University is funded by the Interreg Aurora programme. It aims to empower Indigenous communities to preserve and share their stories using modern digital platforms, while also laying the groundwork for academic pathways such as a new Master’s programme in Arctic Indigenous Cinema—set to launch in 2026 at University of Lapland.

Participants also had the opportunity to tour the facilities of Norrlandsoperan, gaining insight into Umeå’s vibrant cultural infrastructure that supports performing arts, media production, and innovation.

“This recognition by Interreg Aurora reinforces our commitment to creating culturally grounded change through Indigenous digital storytelling,” said Dr. Qureshi. “We are honoured to have shared our progress and to receive such meaningful feedback.”

We extend our gratitude to Interreg Aurora and our partners for the continued support, and look forward to the ongoing development of this unique and impactful project.
