The Botnia Ice Cider

A future framework in farming and ice cider production in Botnia

A future framework in farming and ice cider production in Botnia

The Botnia Ice Cider

Together Brännland Ice Cider, Liselunds Cider and Bute Cider, all ice cider producers located in the Botnia area, has found common ground in production values and future vision of an ice cider producing region. In order to initiate further development of primary production for ice cider, the growth of more producers of ice cider, a legal framework and value enhancement for ice cider in the Botnia and a future destination the three producers have decided to apply within in the European Union for protected status.

Interreg Aurura is funding the prestudy for and completion of an application for protected status as well as communicative tools to make the appellation known in a global context. The goals of the prestudy are, finalization of a sensory reference framework for Botnia Ice Cider, print and digital presence in the market as well as vetting and securing the final application before it is formally presented to the EU.

If granted as a whole the Botnia appellation will be the first cross border appellation in the Nordics.

  • A future appellation will give the ice cider produced within the appellation area have a higher market value as a result of its unique components.
  • The appellation thus prompts participating producers to grow more of its fruit locally.
  • This in turn cuts transports, minimizes water use as well as likely pesticides, fungi and herbicides in the region.
  • In the long term creates jobs locally in a number of sectors affected by appellation production such as tourism, hospitality, agriculture etc.
  • A localization of job markets and the opportunity for qualified and diverse job opportunities within a growing sector will have a positive impact on social sustainability within the region.
  • Any platform that markets an appellation will create product value. If, as is the goal, the ice ciders produced within the appellation area (whether formal or informal) will have a higher market value than equivalents produced from external primary products. We expect this to both enhance margins for the participating producers as well as turn over both in the shorter and the longer term.
