Exchanging knowledge of drone use in traditional reindeer herding

AirHerd

The aim of the Interreg Aurora funded small-scale project AirHerd is to increase cross-border knowledge of drone use in reindeer herding. Previous projects have looked into technological challenges to drone use in reindeer herding, but the main challenges are now found in developing user capabilities that build on established Sami knowledge in reindeer herding.

The AirHerd project focuses therefore on social- and knowledge- aspects of technology implementation and will integrate traditional Sami experience-based knowledge in reindeer husbandry with recent research on human-technology interaction. The project will identify obstacles to large scale drone use and strategies to overcome these in Swedish and Norwegian Sami villages across the border. Through surveys, knowledge gathering and partnership meetings, the project partners will identify the most promising areas of cross-border collaboration regarding drone use in reindeer herding and devise methods to be used in a large scale implementation project.
