Indigenous Digital Storytelling with New Media at Skábmagovat Film Festival 2026

The Interreg Aurora funded project Indigenous Digital Storytelling with New Media was actively represented in January 2026 in Inari at the Skábmagovat Film Festival, one of the most significant cultural events celebrating Sámi cinema and storytelling. During the festival, the project team hosted a demo stand, where they engaged with visitors, shared insights into ongoing research, and introduced the upcoming Arctic Indigenous Cinema Master’s programme at the University of Lapland.

The event provided a valuable opportunity to connect directly with audiences, filmmakers, and community members, fostering meaningful conversations around Indigenous digital storytelling, cultural sovereignty, and emerging media practices. Set against the unique winter landscape of Inari, the festival featured powerful film screenings and discussions that highlight the vitality and diversity of Sámi storytelling today. For the project, participation in Skábmagovat offered both inspiration and a grounded context – linking research activities with lived cultural expression and community engagement.

By participating in such key cultural platforms, the project continues to strengthen its role at the intersection of research, education, and Indigenous creative practice, while supporting the visibility and future development of Sámi film.
