Novia UAS will launch a new Game Arts degree programme starting in 2026. A brand-new English-language degree programme in Game Arts will be offered starting in autumn 2026 as part of the Faculty of Arts and Culture in Jakobstad. A game artist needs skills in character design, technical art, and 3D modelling, but to succeed in a demanding industry, the programme places strong emphasis on project management, entrepreneurship, and multidisciplinary expertise. Sustainability and responsibility are central themes throughout the programme.
The new Game Arts programme is a result of the Interreg Aurora-funded RDI project , Borderless Game Academy, and the project partners Novia in Finland and Visual Magic Education AB in Sweden.
Emma Westerlund, Education and Sustainability Designer, Novia University of Applied Sciences says “When the two pillars of higher education – teaching and research, development and innovation – come together to create entirely new educational programs, so much can fall perfectly into place. In the project Borderless Game Academy, this was exactly what happened. We have – through close collaboration across national and educational boundaries – designed and developed a completely new educational product that supports Nordic cooperation, provides training closely aligned with working life, and focuses on sustainability from within.”
Rickard Wallin, CEO and Education leader, Visual Magic Education also highlights the importance of the cross-border cooperation, “When education transcends geographical limits, opportunities expand and the region grows stronger. Through the Borderless Game Academy project, we have created new pathways for students to study and collaborate across borders more seamlessly than ever before. The initiative has not only strengthened education in the north, but also fostered a shared learning environment where knowledge, skills, and innovation flow freely between countries, preparing students for a future defined by both cooperation and creativity.”
