Open-Source Language Tools to Support Inari and Ume SAAmi Revitalization

Online tools for Inari Saami and Ume Saami language learning

The Interreg Aurora funded project Online Tools for Inari Saami and Ume Saami Language Learning brings together the Inari Saami Language Association (Anarâškielâ servi ry) in Finland and the Ume Saami Language Association in Sweden to co-develop an open-source technical platform featuring e-dictionaries, word inflectors and other digital resources that address critical gaps (such as diacritic support) for these endangered languages.

The project objective is to design, build and openly release a shared suite of online tools and linguistic models—incorporating diacritic-aware inflection engines, searchable dictionaries and learning materials—that will revitalize and sustain the Inari and Ume Saami languages by providing robust digital infrastructure where none (or insufficient) existed before.

Target groups are:
– Students & Language Learners at all proficiency levels
– Teachers & Educators in Saami language courses
– Academics & Researchers working on Saami linguistics and digital humanities
– Elders & Community Activists preserving and transmitting cultural heritage
– Local Businesses & Institutions seeking to support or integrate Saami language content
