Building a Joint Sámi Strategy for Cultural Heritage and Traditional Knowledge

Ä’rbb

The overall objective of the Interreg Aurora funded project Ä´rbb is to establish a shared Sámi-led framework for safeguarding and guiding the use of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) as collective resources of both cultural and economic value. The project will create a common process for identifying what the Sámi themselves define as important ICH, affirming collective ownership, and developing principles for its sensitive use.

Pilot inventories of selected elements will provide cases for building consensus, testing Sámi methodologies, and addressing risks of fragmentation and external appropriation. Building on these results, the Sámi Parliaments will jointly prepare a policy document that defines a common position on the safeguarding of ICH and traditional knowledge. It will articulate principles of self-determination, collective ownership and Free, Prior and Informed Consent, equipping Sámi Parliaments with stronger tools to protect and safeguard the transmission of ICH for future generations.
